Concrete pontoons
For luxury yachts cruising the South Pacific, the Gold Coast megayacht berth at Queensland’s Southport Yacht Club is now the premier destination to dock. A record-breaking deepwater berth is the latest addition to the club’s award-winning marina. Capable of welcoming vessels up to 135 meters long, it is the largest megayacht berth in Australia.
For this project, Sigma PM Consultancy has partnered with Marine Structures (formerly known as Superior Jetties) to deliver the deepwater floating megayacht berth. The design caters to the unique needs of larger vessels, which place greater demands on the marina’s capabilities. We have engineered it for heavy-load buoyancy, offering a high freeboard and deck-loading allowance with drive-on capabilities. The pontoon is made of galvanised reinforced concrete with a fully-welded polyethylene (PE) base liner system. We have bespoke fabricated 24 steel piles measuring 730mm in diameter, with 800mm plastic sleeves and heavy-duty pile guides. A 250mm-thick rubber fender wraps around the entirety of the berthing edge. Horn-shaped stainless-steel bollards were also custom-made to meet both recreational and commercial vessel berthing requirements.
The megayacht berth will open up the Gold Coast to some of the world’s most impressive yachts, with the sector generating an estimated A$280M for the regional economy. The project is one element of a larger A$25M initiative in partnership with the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast, which aim to grow both tourism infrastructure and Queensland’s share of the Australian superyacht sector as a whole to 90% by 2028. The Southport Yacht Club anticipates an influx of luxury yachts as the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane approach.
